The youngest sister’s room differs significantly from that of her older one. Where in the first one long-haired, mostly screaming musicians are depicted, Millie chose medieval themes and fantasy. Elves, dragons, knights, princesses, castles and palaces. No unicorns after all, you think.

You are also rarely here with Millie because she either lies in bed with you or goes to talk to you or Megan in your room, wich you never understood what is so special about. You can clearly see that Millie is crying. You know her well enough to be able to interpret her signs. Moreover, her signs are as clear as a flare in the darkest night. When you knocked she didn’t answer, and when you stood in the room, all you had to do was look at the bed with the transparent curtains and the mountain of duvets and pillows to know your sister underneath. Without asking, you sit on the bed next to the soft mountain and try to find out where Millie might have her head. You know that your little sister sometimes needs… guidance. Mum just wanted me to give it a try and I promised her that I would make you and your girlfriends so tired in the evening that you will fall into bed just like that. What do you think?” At first nothing comes in responce and you think again about the situation. “It doesn’t really change that much, does it? We…“ You are now whispering too. “We only pretend that everything is going according to plan and if you like, we’ll find a way to get you to bed with me.” You stop at these words. With Megan you would have got a fist in the ribs – just for fun. But Millie doesn’t move and you can’t see her expression under the covers. Did you go too far? “And tonight you can stay with me straight away. Practically as a small ‘thank you’ from mum.”

That triggers the hoped-for reaction. The blanket flies towards you and Millie sits up. It turns out you’ve been talking to her feet all the time. You hear the same enthusiastic squeak from Millie and she also falls around your neck. Fortunately, the blanket is over your lap. Now you have such a tent in your crotch that Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary could face serious difficulties.

“It helps her,” you say matter-of-factly.

You just manage not to tell her and somehow you still come up with normal topics like school and the work of Maureen. When she starts reporting on her current boyfriend and what he does in bed with her, you switch the subject brusquely to the Battle of the Somme. The evening died as quickly as the soldiers there and you say goodbye to each other.

“Wait a minute,” Maureen holds you back, and because she sounds genuinely concerned, you turn around again. She looks hurt and embarrassed to the ground. You haven’t really seen such behavior with her yet. “I’m a little embarrassed now…” That makes you listen. You turn completely to her and wait for her confession. That will be interesting. Good night.” You turn around and go upstairs. You don’t hear anything from her, but you feel her looks on your back.

When you reach the top of the stairs, you freeze when you notice a dark shadow in the hallway. Megan is standing in the doorway of her room in her pajamas. Before you can say anything, she approaches you quietly. You see almost nothing in the darkness of the aisle and only when she closes in to your face with her hands does it dawn on you what is about to happen. But neither you nor any other power in the universe can prevent the coming. When her lips touch yours, the only effort you make is to reconcile what has been said with what is happening by accepting her kiss but not replying. It doesn’t take long either, just a second. And as soon as it happens it ends again. Megan strokes your cheek with her thumb and then disappears into her room. As if in a trance, you go to the bathroom, wash yourself, brush your teeth and then support yourself at the sink and look at your reflection.

You do that every night. It helps you to concentrate. You take a deep breath, then one more time and a third time.

“Stay calm,” you whisper. “Stay calm.” Then you look yourself in the mirror. You imagine your imaginary drill sergeant. He is speechless. “Okay…” You breathe in and out again. In and out. In and out. It is time. You have felt it for a few months, oh what, years. There’s no point fighting it. You cannot win this fight. And if your goal remains the same, to ensure the happiness of your sisters, now you have to let yourself fall into the abyss. Then you have to do what you always wanted but never dared to do. If you want to be there for Megan and Millie, you have to admit it now. This is the only way you can give them what they want.

“Yes… you love Megan.” So now you said it. No way back.

“I love Megan.” It’s just a whisper. A Breathe in the seclusion of the bath. But it changed your world.

“And I love Millie.”

Conditions and plans

You knock on your sister’s door. After your conversation and the suggestion to your mother, you now have to do some persuasion without neglecting or hurting one of the sisters.

When Megan calls you in, you find her at her desk in front of her PC.

“What’s up biggie? Has Mum calmed down?” You are standing in her room – which does not happen so often because she prefers to come to you to talk – and do not really know where to look. Why are you so nervous? Maybe it’s because you are in her private space. You are close to each other, but almost always in the presence of others. Holding hands in the forest was special and you have to admit that, in the morning, you managed to forget her breasts on your back, but the warmth of her hand in yours still accompanies you. In school, you kept clenching your fist to make sure your sister’s hand wasn’t in it. Her outfit doesn’t make it any better. She’s wearing a tight-fitting sweater that you’ve never understood why she’s wearing it. That thing doesn’t even keep her warm and you always have to give her your jacket… Oh… She has put on sports pants over her legs that reach just below her knees and is wearing the usual sneakers on her feet. Her hair is open. She has decorated the walls of her room with posters of places she would like to travel to someday. And from music bands.

“Yes. I talked to her. She said Millie could come with us. She’s just worried about her. But I made a suggestion how we can solve the situation for all of us.”

“That sounds good.” But she also knows you and notices the undertone in your voice. She turns to you in her chair and looks at you. “What is it?” she asks, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

“I definitely still need your approval because without it I won’t do anything.”

“Okay…” she says and looks at you skeptically.

“I suggested to Mum that I take Millie with me tonight and that you and I would share a room in the house. I just wanted to be sure…” But before you can finish the sentence your sister jumps at you with a happy squeak and falls into your arms. You are not really prepared for it and with a ‘Uff’ you can just prevent both of you from falling. You use the energy of her swing to lift her up and turn her around. Slowly though, because there is not much space between the table, shelf and bed, but you feel her smile on your neck and in your heart.

“It will be so cool biggie! All the time?” You put her down, but she holds your forearms tightly and shines in your face. You smile and look slightly embarrassed.

“I promised Mum Millie can come in at night if she got scared. But I suspect that her friends will already drain enough power from her so that she can sleep peacefully.“ Megan hugs you again and this time it is firmer. What the… You can’t look down, but you notice how your body reacts to the proximity of a beautiful girl in a normal way. You can already feel the twitch in your groin but Megan just won’t let you go but weigh in your arms and tells of all her plans.

Finally, to prevent a disaster, you sit on her bed and she sits next to you. She hugs you again from the side.

“What?” She looks at you slyly. She does her thing with you again.

“Well the guy who saved sixteen hundred men from the Germans in 1941.”

“What the… you mean Scofield in 1917?” You laugh, bud then say worried: “But in the end he wasn’t very successful as you know.” But Megan just laughs it off.

“But you will be” your sister says and suddenly sounds very calmly. You look into each other’s eyes and she covers your arms with her hands again. Then she pulls you close and hugs even tighter. This is not good for your dick, but it is good for your heart. But that too almost explodes when Megan pulls away from you, slipping her hands down your arms, only to then lift her up and encircle your face. She stands on tiptoe, leans her body against yours and when her hands brush your hair aside and her lips touch your forehead, it is as if you were flying. Your first reaction is a hoarse croak. You clear your throat and Megan grins. Then you try again, but this time only air comes out of your moving mouth. Now your sister is laughing. It is a happy laugh. She pushes you slightly away from her and drives you on: “Come on. Millie needs some of your rhetoric so that she doesn’t turn mum to shreds when there’s dinner.” You just nod like a madman, turn around and leave her room. After you have closed the door, you lean against the wall in the hallway, carefully tuching your forehead, which is still burning and freezing at the same time.

Family problems

Yelling awaits you two as you stride through the front door. After working through the rest of the school day, you drove your sister home in your car.

Millie had two clases less today and has already arrived by bus. The argument you and Megan witness takes place between Millie and your stepmother.

“But mom…” Millie flew as you enter the living room.

“No more arguments young Lady. That is my final word. And if you keep giving back words, the holiday home is cancelled for you. Did you hear that?“ Your mother is really angry. You have never seen her so harsh since the day when you thought it would be a good idea to show your siblings your crafting skills and, with your self-made soapbox car, went head first right into of the family car.

Millie is close to tears. She sees you and Megan standing in the doorway and looks straight into your soul with pain filled eyes.

“Have you understood that?” your mum asks again.

“I hate you,” Millie whispers. Next to you, Megan takes a deep breath and your mother is shocked too.

“What…”

“I hate you!” Millie calls loudly and turns on the heel to storm up the stairs to her room. You three are speechless at first and when the door slams like a thunderclap you turn to each other.

“What’s going on here?” Megan asks amazed.

“Everything okay?” you ask Mum.

“Does that look like this?” You get your answer while your sister is denied hers.

“Uh… no. But I still ask. What is the matter?” Your mother resignedly throws her hands over her head.

“I caught her packing her things for the holidays.”

“So what? That’s not a crime, isn’t it?” Megan replies, amazed and maybe a little angry. Yes, her behavior has actually changed since the experience your other sister had. She would never hit on her mother like that before. Megan likes to prick, but doesn’t hurt.

“And during that I found this!” Your mother accusingly holds something up in the air that looks suspiciously like…

“No?!” you gasp in surprise. “Sexy underwear?!” Your mum holds up a red slip and a matching bra in the air. ,That’s all’? you don’t ask.

“That’s all?” Megan asks. “So you had a fight because of that?” Your mother looks at her reproachfully.

“After everything that happened to her, that’s a clear sign! She thinks she has to dress like this in front of a boy to get noticed.”

“Mum, that’s underwear. You don’t see it.”

“Even worse! No boy comes along. She probably wants to go fishing in the city like…” Stunned, she sits on the sofa with the underwear next to her. Megan rolls her eyes and turns to the stairs to go upstairs as well. She announces she still has to pack.

“Hopefully I don’t forget my sex toys and all the bondage stuff” she flutes and turns to go. Your mom wants to react angrily, but you hold her back.

“You have no idea about Bondage Megan”, you call after her to defuse the situation. At least I think so… Then you turn to your mother.

“Finn, she said she was looking forward to sleeping at your side in your room.” The words from your stepmother don’t sound reproachful, which makes you breathe easy. But here she explains something that made her almost exclude Millie from the party.

“Oh…” So that’s the problem.

“And with these clothes.”

“She’s been sleeping in pajamas for years. Things aren’t necessarily related.” When your mother looks at you doubtfully, you remember your thoughts about Megan. If you want to protect Millie, you may need to get more involved and not always be so selfless. After all, you would kill for the chance to put her body in this bra and panties… No! Fight… please… You take a deep breath.

“If she’s really feeling bad, let her stay with you. I know you’re good for her. I… I’m just worried that she might think you are a replacement for a real boyfriend. Or worse if…” She breaks the sentence and you have a knot in your throat.

“Mum, I understand. Do not worry. If she’s feeling bad, I’ll take care of her. But I’m sure it won’t go that far.”

“Actually, I wanted to discuss this with your father, but you seem to be coming after him.” She hugs you and you return the gesture, pressing yourself against her to show her closeness and trust. “I’m proud of you Finn. I couldn’t ask for a better son. And if you promise to keep an eye on the girls, I’ll let Millie go.” You promise your mom and ask who can tell Millie the good news. “You do that. I like to play the house dragon if that means we create an environment that helps Millie.” You smile at her.

“Mum, one more question. If Millie is okay with that, I would like to allow her to come to me tonight directly. So that she calms down a bit and Megan gets her sleep.“ You are not so sure on the inside, but you seem to have convinced your mother so well that after a few seconds she agrees. You thank her and go upstairs to talk to your sisters.

It’s hard for me to be around you and not be able to hug you. And if I’m still awake in the evening and know that Millie can lie next to you while I’m wondering what I have to do to…” Then she breaks off and realizes how far she has come. Her eyes widen and she looks at you in shock. Her face is just as red as yours. Then it loses all color. “Shit…” she whispers softly. Then the panic comes. “Forget it. I didn’t mean all of that. Everything is actually okay the way it is. Only sometimes not. But it doesn’t matter.” She talks even faster. “We should go back to school. We have been away far too long and if we go now you can go to historyclass and…”

She falls silent when you take her in your arms – very gently. Your only exert so much pressure that she know you’re there. After a while she also raises her arms and wraps them around your torso. You raise a hand, grasp the back of her head and lay it against your shoulder with the pressure of a falling leaf. You feel her breath on you and the warmth of her face. Her hair tickles your hand. Slowly she becomes calmer and after an eternity in which none of you said anything, she mumbled an almost inaudible ‘thank you’ in your armpit. Megan is half a head shorter than you and so you put your cheek on her head and comfort her. Her scent enchants you and you almost get lost in that. You know for a fact that you are addicted the second you breathe the scent in your nose.

“Everything is all right. Everything is fine,” you whisper and brush through her silky hair. You can’t speak louder, even if you had the will to do so.

But is really everything in order? You are satisfied when you see her breathing rate decrease, but half your universe is just exploding in your head. You were only that close to her when something really bad had happened. But not like this. Not because there was something between you. You notice that this has a completely different scope. And worst of all, you realize that you like holding Megan in your arms. A goddam lot.

But it’s not about you. Even if it apparently is. And while most of you calmly talk to your sister without really knowing what you’re saying, a small part thinks about what to do now. Thoughts are racing in your head. If Megan really has feelings for you, or at least problems with you and Millie getting so close, then you can’t go on with the tour to exclude yourself from all your strategies. If what you suspect is real, then your worst nightmare and your greatest hope have come true. Then you have to get involved in the equation. That’s the only way to make Megan happy. But that also means that your imaginary drill sergeant has lost.

But before you can continue planning, you have to take another step towards the abyss to make Megan happy. The feeling of her fingers on the back of your right hand brings you back to reality. You both look down on your hands and when you look each other in the eyes, Megan smiles.

“Why do you know that everything will be fine?” Her eyes are still wet and her face is flushed, but in her question lays curiosity, not fear.

“Because I will take care of it. Because that’s my life,” you say, and nothing in the universe could prove these words wrong. Megan smile even widens.

“I know.” Then you walk wordlessly back to your car. On the way there her hand touches yours again and after a short time you take her hand and your fingers intertwine.

A walk in the dark forest

“Okay, go ahead,” you say a few minutes later. The two of you walk side by side along a secluded path that meanders through a forest next to a stream that borders the city in which you live. Nobody else comes here and your siblings and you use the remote part of the forest as a retreat for the very difficult conversations.

“Why do you think that?”

“Me and Millie? Is it about her staying with me at night?” you ask quietly and actually it’s not a question.

“What happened to Millie is bad, I know. No question. And if you hadn’t thrashed this wimp, I would have done it. But… But everything has changed since then.”

You slow down your walking pace and you look at Megan steadily from the side, while she alternately looks at the ground and the sky. In between, she looks to the side. Everywhere just not in your eyes.

“Do not get me wrong. What you do for Millie is wonderful. She can count herself lucky to have such a great big brother. But…“ Again she breaks off.

A clarifying conversation with your Wombat

You look at your hands at the wheel.

“What is it?” she finally asks when you do nothing but stare. You don’t look at her and keep looking straight ahead.

“Listen Megan, I know you would do anything for Millie. I know she is as important to you as she is to me. And I don’t care if mum or dad see it that way. I know this. And the three of us always got along really well.” You don’t know if what you say helps Megan. Christ, you don’t even know exactly what Megan means. Either she’s just pissed off because you make her believe that you won’t be on her side during a difficult family discussion like you usually do, or worse, she thinks you wouldn’t believe that she loves her little sister and that you are even driving a wedge between them… Or she reacts so briskly because Millie sleeps next to you in your bed every night. What cannot be! She is your sister damn! And just because you like your other sister… Fuck… Your drill sergeant slaps his face. Megan just looks at you at first. “You two are infinitely important to me,” you continue. “I can’t stand one of you suffering, you know that, right?” Megan looks at you seriously. She too is silent for a few seconds.

“Of course I know that.” She smiles at you, but you’re not done yet.

“I believe you. But I also think something is bothering you. “There are more exciting things than the First World War.”

“For example?” your sister asks a bit defiantly. She had to listen to several lectures about why the invention of the tank was so important for the progress on the western front. The last day of school

“Millie my dear, can you hear me?” Megan asks playfully and doesn’t get an answer. Then she looks at you. She takes a deep breath and says: “I think you are doing the right thing for her.”

You look at her briefly and smile before you concentrate on the street again. You have stated many times that you do not want to be disturbed while driving, but Megan resists the rule – like every day – on the grounds that you could drive a car well and that Millie is not responsive anyway. The argument that you carry the most important things in your life sometimes silences her, but not today and you can’t be angry with Megan either. Talking to her is always interesting, always funny and you always have something to think about later. But not about her tits on your back! Not about her lips! Not … oh shit …

“Thank you Sis,” you say lovingly and smile at the street in front of you. “I just hope that she will be better soon.”

“Is she still talking in her sleep?”

Finally, your thoughts wander back into the present. After you and your father nodded, your dad just asks: “So? Something new this night.” You shake your head.

“She was with me again. This time she held out until three o’clock before she went over.” The two of you grimace. It’s about Millie and her nightly walks from her room to your bed.

“Can’t we just tell her to sleep in his bed right away from now on?” Megan calls from the kitchen. “She walks past my room every time and always wakes me up. “Now that’s enough! I…” Luckily the family’s sleepyhead just comes through the door into the room.

Millie never clarified what the acronym really means to her. Megan, on the other hand, calls you by different names almost every day and has at least a dozen names for her big brother. “Mustard gas on the western front in 1918,” you correct calmly. You don’t get involved with your sister’s teasing so early in the morning.

“The parties are much more important anyway, mum,” Megan clarifies for her mother.

After breakfast, Millie and you – in a hurry and under the calls of the early bird – throw on your school clothes and sprint outside. On the way, you take your mother’s three packed lunches under your arms and dive into your car, where the two girls are already waiting for you. A memory from the past

You can still remember the day you saw Megan and Millie for the first time. Shortly after your parents separated, your father had quickly got together with another woman. After a short time he introduced you to the new family. Maybe it was a little early for you. You had hardly recovered from your parents’ separation and were not yet ten years old, but both wanted to continue with their lives as quickly as possible.

A new dawn

You wake up to the first rays of light of the day falling on your face through the window. The first thing you feel is the warmth on your face. You feel that every morning and it is a wonderful feeling not to be woken up by the alarm clock in your cell phone, but by the warmth on your face.

“Don’t stay in bed too long,” you admonish her with a mischievous smile in the corners of your mouth. You know only too well that Millie is a late riser just like you. When you roll out of bed, you still make sure that Millie is wrapped in her duvet. You look at her pajamas and notice that these are slowly becoming too small for your sister. No! Then you get dressed. You only need to put on a T-shirt. As so, and in boxer shorts, you turn around at the door to your bedroom. The petite head of your little sister has already sunk back on the pillows. “Ten minutes,” you warn her playfully, then you leave the room.

Your first course goes to the bathroom as always. Millie may have the luxury of being able to sleep a little longer, but you need a couple of strong taps of cold water in the face to start your day. You look in the mirror and ask yourself – like every morning – what had to happen to make your life so complicated. Your imaginary drill sergeant appears in front of you to light a fire under your ass like every morning.

“Get your shit together!” you hiss quietly. “Get your shit together and be the hero of the day.” Perhaps this time your speech will help you not to be completely depressed and disgusted again in the evening. You doubt it.

You shower quickly and warmly. You prefer cold, but you have a job like every morning. The music that you play on the small but powerful loudspeaker invigorates your senses better than the hot water on your face.

After you are done, you wipe the steamed-up mirror, but leave a spot on the bottom left. You put a smile on your face, no comparison to what you gave your little sister, and go downstairs. But not without preparing a toothbrush for Millie, a towel drenched in warm water for her face and a damp towel for afterwards and drawing a smiley face on the misted mirror surface in the corner.

You go outside into the hallway past your parents’ already empty bedroom, then down the stairs. The smell of fried bacon and eggs rises in your nose and leads the way to the kitchen. Your mother is standing in the kitchenette while your father is sitting at the table reading the newspaper.

“Good morning, my family of clichés,” you greet them. Before either of them can say a word, something falls on you from behind. A shrill scream and two arms loop around your shoulders. You muster a startled gasp but react quickly. You grab the attacking arms, hold them over your head and lift the body in the air and on your back and turn around several times. Bright chuckles fill the kitchen and under the eyes of your parents you set the attacker down again. Your father shakes his head amused.

“Who am I?” asks the giggling voice behind you and covers your eyes with delicate but strong hands.

“The most annoying sister in the world,” you grumble, but you can’t help but smile. Your sister’s breasts press against your neck and when you let the girl slide down on you, you feel them too slide down your back. Even if the contact was short, the feeling will stay with you for the rest of the day.

You used to have to pull yourself together to avoid touching the place they touched to make sure they were actually gone. Come on. Fight! You are a fighter, your drill sergeant roars at you and he starts his day too.

“What? How mean!” A loud bang echoes through the kitchen when your attacker hits you on the rear with full force.

“Megan!” Shouts your mother. “Not so rough.” But you just laugh and turn around.

Your other sister is standing in front of you. Megan the tornado. Unlike you or Millie, she is an early riser, already fully clothed and full of energy. Today she is wearing her blue denim jacket with the wine-red t-shirt underneath, together with the blue striped skirt and black leggings and the obligatory sneakers. She tied her light brown hair into a ponytail that lies over her right shoulder. No nosebleed now! Fight you bastard. Fight! You have a task!

You just gathered so much strength this morning to counter the attack from just now and your next action. You grab her hips and whirl her around several times, this time the other way around. You turn so fast that her legs come dangerously close to the chairs and walls in the kitchen. But that doesn’t stop you. These two things are the first steps in your morning greeting. Followed by number three, the Fist Bump.

“G’Morning sis.”

“G’Morning Bro.” Another smile and Megan starts to help your mother.

Then your energy is back to zero and you sit down at the table with your father. While Megan is shoveling piles of ham and eggs onto her plate, you look from your mom to your dad and to Megan. When your mom tries to explain to your sister again and again why it is not good to eat so much cholesterol, you smile involuntarily.
